John F. Kennedy, President of the United States, was assassinated on November 22, 1963.

Cuban diplomatic missions abroad were placed on a special alert status about 2 days after the assassination, due to apprehension by the Cuban government that hostile activity might be directed against them.

A senior Cuban diplomat reported that Cuban diplomatic missions received messages exhorting them to exercise vigilance and mount a night-day watch of their premises. They were also advised to be on guard against hostile provocations.

One chief of mission was told to formally submit his request by cable to visit a country friendly to Cuba, after he requested permission to accept a long-standing invitation by telephone. He received authority to quit his post on December 6, but as of December 9, there had been no indication from Havana that the alert order was to be considered revoked.
