3 On 26 September AMCLOCK/1 met DI GERVENO from 1500 to 1830
at (den B. AMCIOCK/1 appeared to be in good healtn and rested and in
high spirits _ He was very glad to see CI GERVENO aga in and to be able
to discuss things openly _ He criticized bitterly the living conditione
in PBRUMEN but does not s eem to be affected by it or the fact that
he had to live under a regime he obvious ly hates In fact_ he seemed
te sure of himsel f and plans to return to PBRUMEN at the end of the
HTBAS TE 8egs ion He is scheduled to remain in New York until December
1967 but may return to PBRUMEN before then for a short vigit to look
a fter his ailing mother ana his wife who had a baby two weeks
prior to his departure_ This may have influenced AMCLOCK/1 not to
think about a poss ible defection at thi8 cime which came as a surprise
to the case officer who expected the agent to have second thoughts
about return to PBRUMEN where he is not happY .
AMCLOCK/1 explained that he could not make contact as instructed
because he had destroyed the phone nuber and both accommo dation
addresses we had given him for him to report from ins ide PBRUMEN He
destroyed them in the toilet at the airport upon his arrival in PBRUMEN
in late December 1966 after observing a number of uniformed individuals
at the airport which he considered to be suspicious although had
nothing to do with AMCLOCK/l This may have been a convenient excuse for
hi8 failure Eo make contact a8 ingtructed but DI GERVENO did not pres8
the issue Instead he was given the_operational numbers o f the Beekman
s ite ana o f the Base in New York Iden IP and told he_ceuld a lwayg call
there if he could not locate DI GERVENO at (den He wag also given
the JMWAVE number fox emergency contact AMCTOCK/1 8aid he tried to
278
0 make contact by calling (den J to inquire about MIDDAUGH in true name
0
pu% afEer Much prObing he wag told that MIDDAUGH was in Waghington and
wa 8 g iven a phone number for him to call direct AMCLOCK/1 wab planning
R Co ca]l Washi ngton at, a later if he had not been contacted
1
5 _ AMCIOCK/1 reported that he has had no gecurity problems and
1i ha & not been molested inside of PBRUMEN _ He was treated royally by
the AMTHUG regime in early 1967 ana everybody seemed pleaged to 8 0e
1
him back Apparently hi8 return surprised bome individuale who
vately thought he would defect rather than return to PBRUMEN to live
During ch i& time he enjoyed special privileges and received frequent
invitationg to official functiong with foreign diplomate_ However _
by Ti 1967 che special privilege8 and invitations were gradually
9uepended for no apparent reason (For example , he was no longer
a]loved Co cake his private car to a government garage for repairs
and he had Lo arrange for themintenance of his house which wag given
to nim and kept up by the government at first) AMCLOCK/1 believe8
that thfe wa 8 due to hi8 be under "obgervation # while going through
8 reorientation Period after hi8 long gtay abroad _ There 18 nothing
to inafcate that AMCLOCK/1 19 not trubted or accepted by other 'govern-
ment officia]e The fact that he wab sent out again 18 @Eustrong

from PB RUMEN (Tden C; told AMCLOCK/1 to watch out for Iden B who is a
member 0 f the intelligence service and will be reporting on AMCLOCK/1 .
Koh the implication was that AMCLOCK/1 was still under observation by the KAu

way poss ible to prove himself while in New York_ AMCLOCK/1 explained
that this meant to live a model life while abroad and to perform extra
work whenever required , without complaining AMCLOCK/1 believes that
(Iden B i9 being trained to take over AMCLOCK/1 S position as an expert

AMCLOCK/1 could not come out with any clear indication that he was
suspected or was falling out 0 f grace with the AMTHUG regime _ Although
the agent has a tendency to emphasize his "delicate" position, the
case officer believes that he is not mistrusted ana still enjoys a
favorable position in the government although probably cons idered too
bourgeois to
be completely integrated with their communist philosophy .
